2018 Bob Garnett Scholarship Announcement

Congratulations to Katie Nguyen and Anthony Torres, our 2016 recipients of the Bob Garnett Memorial Scholarships.  Katie will be attending the University of South Florida and Anthony will be attending Florida SouthWestern State College.

Since 1997 DCCA has contributed $25,000 in scholarships  in our Deep Creek community.  There has been more than one year where multiple scholarships have been awarded.  The Civic Association believes the scholarship is important to help an outstanding student begin or continue their education.  The Bob Garnett Memorial Scholarship for 2018 continues to be $1,000.  The scholarship will be awarded and given directly to the recipient, not the school.

While grades are discussed during an interview, it is not the sole award determination.  The award will be based on the following criteria:

  • Need
  • Community involvement
  • Realistic goals

  • All senior high school students or continuing college/vocational students whose parents/grandparents are members of the Deep creek Civic Association with their dues in good standing as of April 1, 2018. (Please check the expiration date above your name on the newsletter label.) Adult DCCA members returning to school may also apply.  Students living with a guardian who is a DCCA member may also apply.
  • The award recipient must be attending, or have been accepted to attend (1) an accredited four-year college/university, (2) an accredited two-year program, or (3) a full-time preparation program at an accredited trade or technical school as a full-time student.

Students applying for the scholarship must:

  1. Complete this application.
  2. Write a statement (a paragraph to one page) as to why they should receive the scholarship.
  3. Provide an acceptance letter or college ID for those currently in college
  4. Participate in a face-to-face interview with the DCCA scholarship panel.

In order to be considered, applications must be received by March 31, 2018,at which time DCCA records reflect that membership dues are paid for April, 2018.

Individual interviews will be scheduled for Saturday morning in April 21, 2018, at the POA Section 23 conference room, 26217 Rampart Blvd.  In prior years, telephone interviews were conducted for students attending college and unable to come home for the weekend.  However, it is to the student’s advantage to interview in person.  Interviews will be conducted by a panel of three community professionals.  Students will be notified of their interview time after April 11.  We will not adjust the interview date/time.

If the successful applicant attends Charlotte High School, the award will be presented at their Senior Awards Night.  A continuing student will receive the award at the June DCCA Board meeting.

If you have a question about the information presented, or the application process, you may contact Mrs. Burr at (941) 764-1866 or (941) 204-9974.
